When your ski-weary legs are basking in the naturally warm mineral water of Banff’s Upper Hot Springs you might not care about this, but those thighs are soaking in the origins of Canada’s national park system.

Back in 1883, three railway workers (who may also have also had weary thighs) stumbled across hot water flowing from a cave on Sulphur Mountain. Their attempts at cashing in on the “water cure” craze of the day lead to the protection of the area and, eventually, the creation of Banff National Park, Canada’s first.

Today, the Upper Hot Springs attract people from all over the world who love the relaxation of a warm soak on a cold winter day.
