Dining at Eco Cafe at The Village at Pigeon Lake
All three squares are served up at this casual eatery. Rocking a lively country-store vibe, there’s a long wooden counter framing an artsy chalkboard beverage menu, and a fireplace set in the middle of the dining room. The space is lively with a colourful design scheme enhanced by wall murals and stained-glass windows depicting iconic Alberta landscapes. The focus is on sourcing locally, environmental respect and providing natural, organic fare at affordable prices. It’s a tall order, but one that’s achieved at Eco Cafe.
Breakfasts at Eco Cafe
Jump-start your day with the protein combo served up in the Italian frittata or perhaps a bagel topped with house-cured smoked salmon. If carbs aren’t a dirty word in your world, you’ll enjoy several sweet options, such as light and fluffy ricotta pancakes. English muffins are made in-house, as is the cinnamon raisin bread that gets whipped into french toast.
In a rush? Pop in throughout the day to nab a freshly brewed coffee, latte or espresso. Just out of the oven muffins, cinnamon buns and granola bars sit enticingly on the counter, as does the perfect car ride companion - house-made nuts-and-bolts mix.
Lunch and Dinner at Eco Cafe
Salads, sandwiches and burgers all make menu appearances, but with panache. Forget boring chicken salad. Taste buds come alive with delicate organic greens topped by tandoori chicken. It’s spice inflected, but not hot.
Inspiration for main courses comes from around the globe as evidenced by Malaysian Green Curry, Caribbean Spiced Baby Back Ribs and fire-roasted Mexican Spiced Pork Chops, punctuated with pecan chipotle butter and sweet potato dumplings. For a real treat, try Turkey Farsi, ground turkey and pork wrapped around a sage and apple stuffing. You probably weren’t expecting to find that on a menu in rural Alberta, now where you? Dinner specials run every night, and if you’re a fan of seafood, you’ll want to arrive early on Friday night for delectable fish and shellfish dishes.
Enhance your meal with a glass of organic wine or beer. You can also liven things up with a fun specialty drink such as green tea spiked with orange-flavoured liqueur Grand Marnier.
If happiness comes to you via from-scratch desserts, you’re in the right place. After your meal, treat yourself to an individual fruit pie generously dolloped with whipped cream or consider a thick slice of carrot cake slathered with cream cheese icing. Also worth the calories are their cheesecakes, especially if you opt for either Turtle or Peanut Butter. Decadent without being too rich and heavy, these cheesecakes have a lightness about them - almost like a mousse. Naturally, that means you won’t be required to share. We say so.
Vegetarians and those who are gluten sensitive will find plentiful options on the menu for appetizers, main courses and best of all, dessert. Catering for large groups, romantic dinners and barbecues is readily available.
