How often do you actually get a chance to immerse yourself in a landscape? Horseshoe Canyon is a must-see spot that gives you the chance to do just that. All you need to do is walk from the rim down to the canyon floor and marvel at the landscape that looms above you. The U-shaped canyon sits just right beside Highway 9, just 17 km (10.5 mi) west of Drumheller. Visitors can descend along a gently sloping trail to the canyon floor to get a closer look at the maroon-striped wall that record the passing of time. The rock layers go all the way back to the Cretaceous period some 70 million years ago when dinosaurs roamed a lush tropical landscape. The two arms of the canyon are each about 5 km (3 mi) long and make for an easy day hike. If you’re less adventurous or pressed for time, viewing platforms at the canyon rim deliver awe-inspiring views and great photos.
