Among Alberta’s legendary “big things in small towns” is the World’s Largest Lamp. Donalda’s population is just a few hundred inhabitants — a small village radiating its generous spirit when the giant lamp shines brightly every night. Its glow overlooks the Meeting Creek Coulee, the northern point of the Canadian Badlands. Located 40 km (25 mi) from Stettler, the steel and fibreglass structure stands 13 metres (43 ft) high and about 5 metres (17 ft) wide at the base. Across the street is the Lamp Museum, which boasts the world’s most extensive collection of oil lamps. Visit to see more than 1,000 lamps, some of which date back to the 1600s. Donalda leads to a host of outdoor activities, too. Explore the magnificent Canadian Badlands on foot or by bike. The Willow Canyon trail leads to 129 acres from the top of the coulee rim to the bottom of the valley. The Badlands can get hot in the summer, but you can cool off at the beach and campgrounds on Buffalo Lake, just 49 km (30 mi) from the town.
