The community of South Cooking Lake is a quiet spot for beach time, walks and family picnics — just 24 kilometres (15 mi) from Sherwood Park. If nature walks and swim time aren’t for everybody in your crowd, entertain stop by the playground or patio. Like some friendly competition? Head for the pickleball and basketball courts. When your crew gets hungry, move to the picnic shelter and BBQ pits to make it a full-day affair. South Cooking Lake attracts wildlife, waterfowl and shorebirds. Bring your kayak or canoe for closer glimpses, or stay onshore to watch from multiple waterfowl viewing areas. Stroll the small lake trail for incredible views and encounters with birds, butterflies and varied plant life. The Cree, Blackfoot and the Sarcee were the first to inhabit this area, known as “Here’s Where We Cook Lake” or “Cooking Lake". Drive past South Cooking Lake to Lakeview and see the rebuilt “Lakeview Fireplace” — all that remains of this famous meeting place.
