Prince’s Island Park is an oasis for Calgary’s downtown office workers, visitors to the city and anyone looking to have a little fun in the heart of the city. The green oasis sits in the Bow River and is connected to the north and south banks of the river by footbridges. The park was created in the 1950s and named for Peter Anthony Prince, a lumberman from Quebec who came to Calgary in 1886 and founded the Eau Claire Lumber Mill on a site close to where the park now sits. Today, Prince’s Island hosts special events like the annual Calgary Folk Music Festival. It’s also home to a constructed wetland designed to treat stormwater before it is returned to the river. Visitors will also find an interpretive trail that explains how the wetland works and details attempts to restore native plants to the area. Prince’s Island has picnic sites, a playground and a paved pathway. It’s also home to the River Café, a fixture on Calgary’s dining scene.
