Kootenay Plains is a large area accommodating all eight group sites in an oval shape. Each site has a fantastic view of the Rocky Mountains, is treed and close to numerous hiking trails such as Siffleur Falls, Two O'Clock Creek Ridge, Thompson Creek Falls and numerous others. Group sites 1, 4, 5 and 7 each have a camp shelter on them; the other sites do not. Many groups have made this location a camping tradition coming to this area for over 30 years. There is a climbing wall located behind sites 4 and 5 open to the public. Please respect the camping groups in place and walk around the perimeter of their group site. This area is close to the well-known Abraham Lake, a man-made reservoir housing the Bighorn Dam, which is great for fishing. The North Saskatchewan River flows into it as well as many other creeks and rivers. Because of the graves located on-site, the Kootenay Plains are significant for local Aboriginals. The unique grassland vegetation is protected by the nearby ecological reserve. Motorized vehicles in the reserve are prohibited. Also, enjoy the 5km trail from the day-use parking area to Siffleur Falls.
