Jake's Gift at Esplanade Arts and Heritage Centre
Jake’s Gift is a multi-award-winning Canadian play written and performed by Julia Mackey. Inspired by her experiences interviewing D-Day veterans in Normandy, France, the play tells the story of Jake, a World War II veteran who reluctantly returns to Juno Beach for the 60th anniversary of the D-Day landings. There, he meets Isabelle, a curious young girl whose friendship encourages him to confront memories of war and the loss of his brother, Chester. A moving story about remembrance, sacrifice, and human connection, Jake’s Gift has been performed in more than 250 communities across Canada and internationally in the UK, France, and the United States. Directed by Dirk Van Stralen, this acclaimed production continues to touch audiences with its powerful and deeply personal tribute to those who served.
