Summer in Alberta means longer days to enjoy the stunning scenery with lots of sunshine and bluebird skies — it’s one of the sunniest provinces in Canada, after all. But the weather can change quickly, especially in the Canadian Rockies, and you don’t want a shift in weather to catch you off-guard. Below are tips to help you choose what to pack to enjoy your time in Alberta.

Wardrobe essentials

The landscape in Alberta is diverse, from the soaring Rocky Mountains to rolling prairies and otherworldly Canadian Badlands, so the activities you have planned can greatly influence the clothing you’ll need.

In the city

The summer weather in larger cities like Calgary or Edmonton averages in the mid-twenties (that’s Celsius), but temperatures can reach above 30°C (86°F). You can largely stick to casual summer pieces like shorts, light pants, T-shirts, blouses and dresses, plus light footwear like sneakers or sandals — make sure you have comfortable shoes if you’re heading out on walking trails. Pack a pair of jeans for cooler evenings (it can dip to single digits during early summer) along with a sweater and light jacket — one that’s waterproof can be helpful. Consider bringing a couple of items suitable for going out to a nice dinner or a cocktail lounge if you plan on enjoying any nightlife. If the Calgary Stampede is on your itinerary, you’ll want to pack some Western-style pieces to get in on the fun and look the part.

Don’t forget a swimsuit, either. Floating on the Bow River in Calgary is a favourite summer pastime and there are even beaches to enjoy in both cities.

Don't fret if you forget to pack something - Alberta's cities are brimming with incredible shops, malls and markets.

In the great outdoors

Layers are key for outdoor activities, whether you’re in the Canadian Rockies or another part of the province. Mornings and evenings tend to be cool in the summer, especially in the mountains at the beginning of the season — July and August are the warmest months. Bring warmer pieces, like a sweatshirt or fleece jacket, long-sleeve shirt and a packable rain or shell jacket to throw on over summer clothing. It doesn’t hurt to have a packable down jacket, just in case, along with some quick-dry pants or shorts.

Light footwear like sneakers or sandals will do for casual strolls and most outdoor excursions, but you’ll need hiking shoes or boots with sturdy treads if you hit the trails. Bring a few pairs of quality socks that are high enough to prevent rubbing and blistering from your hiking footwear.

Bonus tip: Be mindful of the fabrics you wear. Clothing made of moisture-wicking material will help keep you comfortable on hot days.

Pack clothing that can be easily layered to adapt to changing temperatures throughout the day.

Accessories and other essential items

Accessories and safety items are equally important to pack for your summer getaway in Alberta. There’s no shortage of sunshine in the province, which means you’ll need plenty of sunscreen, UV-blocking lip balm, a hat and sunglasses. No one needs a sunburn to put a damper on their day. Alberta is also a dry climate, so moisturizer is a must.

You’ll often see mosquitos during the summer in Alberta, so you’ll also want some bug spray and bug-bite ointment.

It’s important to travel sustainably and preserve the beautiful scenery for generations to come. Every small change counts, and packing a reusable water bottle is a great first step to avoid single-use plastic bottles. Tap water in Alberta is safe to drink and you’ll save some money.

When it comes to safety, a small first aid kit with essentials can go a long way. When you’re adventuring in the Canadian Rockies, you’ll also want to have bear spray that’s easily accessible. You can purchase this at most outdoor gear or camping-supply stores.

Remember to bring a small backpack for all of your essentials and to shed layers of clothing as the temperature rises throughout the day.
