Chickakoo Lake Recreation Area

Chickakoo Lake Recreation Area in Onoway offers forested lakeside trails where visitors can spot birds and wildlife on an easy day trip from Edmonton. This recreation area’s mix of woodlands and lakes attracts many species of birds, along with moose, deer and beavers. In warmer months, visitors can hike, bike, birdwatch or explore 14 km (9 mi) of trails on horseback through 480 acres of forest. While swimming is not allowed, the calm lake is popular for canoeing and kayaking. When the snow falls, groomed trails welcome cross-country skiers, who can warm up in a cozy chalet between loops. Picnic tables and viewpoints are scattered along the paths, making it easy to pause for lunch or simply take in the quiet northern landscape before heading back to the city.
