The secret is out: Spring in Alberta is a hidden gem of a season bursting with things to do.
From late March through May, Alberta is home to some of the world’s best skiing while resorts elsewhere are closing up shop. Our farmers’ markets roar back to life with locally made goodies and hiking season ramps back up—without the crowds that come in summertime.
As the snow melts, cyclists take to Alberta’s paved pathways and car-free highways for picturesque rides. Folks head to glamping resorts and campsites for longer days outdoors and nights around the fire. Meanwhile, local wildlife perks up as the sun shines brighter and plants sprout to life. There are festivals to be seen, road trips to explore and plenty of restaurants, museums and events to take in when you’re ready for some time indoors.
Outdoor activities
Find yourself in a season of transition
There’s never a shortage of things to do in Alberta’s great outdoors. Spring means there’s still plenty of skiing to be had in the Canadian Rockies. At the same time you’ll find early season hiking, camping and fishing trips.
Spring tends to take its time arriving in Alberta. In April, you might be teased with a bout of warm weather followed by a cheeky dump of snow. By May, expect warm days, wildflowers at lower elevations and lots of sunshine.
Slap on the sunscreen for spring skiing
Blue skies, powdery soft snow, sunshine-y days plus lots of special events on Alberta’s ski hills make these legendary slopes a dream in springtime. Make sure to pack layers, sunscreen and ski goggles with 100% UV protection and read our guide to spring skiing.
Catch baby animals and spring migrations
You might spy large mammals like bears, elk and bighorn sheep as they spend spring raising their young. Birdwatchers flock to Alberta to take in spring migrations. It’s a chance to add some rare species to the life list.
Beat the crowds
Alberta’s best, just for you
Want to take in the vibrant blue hues of Alberta’s iconic mountain lakes without knocking elbows with a stranger? Spring tends to mean quieter trails and scenic outlooks compared to busier summertime. April and May can give you more space to savour each moment.

Glamping
Sleep in the great outdoors
The mild mornings and warm afternoons of spring are perfect for glamping. Stay in a beautiful geodome in the boreal forest, a glammed-out tent with a real bed or even a glass-walled micro-cabin in the Rockies. Because you deserve a s’more cooked over an open fire and a real bed.
Festivals and events
Always something to do
Spring in Alberta brings a lively mix of festivals and events. Celebrate food, art, culture and more from the slopes to the cities.
