Wainwright is a great base to explore the prairies of east-central Alberta. The town is also close to the Battle River Train Trestle, the second-largest train trestle in the country. Completed in 1908, the trestle is still in use, and a nearby rest area offers a vantage point to admire the river valley and the symmetry of the bridge. Interpretive signs provide a capsule history of the construction. Bison also played an important part in Wainwright’s early history. Canada’s largest bison statue, found in the heart of town, acknowledges these noble beasts. Visitors can even stop by the Bud Cotton Buffalo Paddock to see real bison. It sits at the entrance to the Camp Wainwright military base. Wainwright’s historic main street offers plenty of spots to grab a coffee or bite to eat, and local shops give souvenir hunters plenty of choice. There are also cozy bed and breakfasts and modern hotels if you want to stay awhile.
