Here’s a perfect spot to play where dinosaurs roamed in the eerie, odd landscape of the Badlands. Your adventures can take you hiking alongside the Red Deer River or floating or paddling through the valley. Don’t let the mention of water fool you, though—the land is arid and speckled with cactus. At night, enjoy the privacy and shade of cottonwood trees surrounding 39 campsites in your tent or RV. There are picnic tables, fire pits, water, dry toilets, refuse containers, a playground, and a boat launch. (Firewood is not available.) Once your fire has died down, lie back and absorb the ink-black night sky covered by a sea of stars. If you have time, visit the day-use area to the north or drive to a viewpoint just northeast of Huxley for an unbelievable view of the valley. You can also drive up the road to Dry Island Buffalo Jump Provincial Park to hike among the coulees and cactus. The Tolman East Campground is 65 km (40 mi) northeast of Drumheller.
