Qiviut Fibre Mill Tour

Qiviut Inc. is a 100% Inuit-owned qiviut fibre mill producing yarn, spinning fibre, knitted items, and reusable Nuna Heat hand warmers from the warm winter undercoat of Arctic muskoxen. Owner Tanis Simpson, originally from Sachs Harbour, NWT, sources sustainably harvested muskoxen hides from the Inuvialuit Settlement Region; she and her team comb out the fibre by hand before running it through their vintage mill machines. They also operate a small storefront, Arctic Indulgence, which carries Inuit-made crafts. Visitors to the mill receive a thorough 60-minute tour, where an experienced mill worker leads them through the entire process, from combing out one of the world’s most precious fibres with a fork–which guests are welcome to try!--to washing, carding, pin-drafting, spinning, dyeing, and skeining their four blends of qiviut yarn. Visitors also receive a small sample of qiviut fibre.
