Okotoks Erratic

Okotoks Erratic, located along AB-7 in Foothills County, Alberta, offers visitors a massive glacial boulder and a striking prairie landmark. The Okotoks Erratic is the largest known rock in the Foothills Erratics Train, a narrow band of rocks carried by ice along the mountainfront and deposited as the glacier melted more than 10,000 years ago. This ancient journey left the erratics scattered from Jasper National Park all the way to northern Montana, connecting Alberta’s mountain landscapes with the open prairie. Weighing an estimated 16,500 tonnes and measuring about 9 metres high, 41 metres long and 18 metres wide, the Okotoks Erratic has cracked into several pieces yet still dominates the flat surrounding fields. Its size, age and dramatic setting make it an impressive stop for travellers interested in geology, photography and Alberta’s natural history.
