Melsness Mercantile

Built in 1925, Melsness Mercantile stands at the heart of Valhalla Centre and has been designated a Provincial Historic Resource. The building holds particular significance for the Lutheran Norwegian community of the region, serving as the hamlet’s only general store and post office for more than fifty years. It is also closely tied to Ole Melsness—one of the area’s earliest homesteaders and a respected community leader. Architecturally, the Mercantile remains an excellent example of rural commercial design from pre–First World War Alberta. Today, the Mercantile site continues to celebrate this heritage. It is home to the Mercantile Café, known for its daily specials; the Heritage Room, a museum honouring the region’s Scandinavian roots; a Craft Corner showcasing local artisans; a Norwegian gift shop; and, just outside, the charming Valhalla Troll Park.
