High Level Bridge

When you're close to the river valley anywhere in central Edmonton, it's hard to miss the High Level Bridge. The massive steel truss bridge sits over 150 feet above the North Saskatchewan River, connecting the north and south sides of the city. Built between 1910 to 1913, the 2,550-foot bridge connects the legislature grounds with the trendy university area neighbourhoods on the south side. Originally built as a transportation link between the cities of Edmonton and Strathcona (amalgamated with Edmonton in 1912), it was traversed by train, streetcar, automobile, and pedestrians. Today, the Edmonton Radial Railway Society runs historical streetcars along the upper deck's tracks from May to October while vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists cross the bridge on the lower deck.
