The sweeping ranchlands of the Southern Rockies evoke images of a time when cowhands and the townies gathered on a Saturday night for a potluck dinner and barn dance. That tradition lives on at the unique Great Canadian Barn Dance Campground near Waterton. It started as a local father-and-son country and western band, playing a few gigs in a rented barn. Their idea included a good old-fashioned Alberta beef dinner and a dance. It was a hit. In 1991, they bought a barn of their own. Soon, customers were arriving from far and wide in campers and trailers, asking to park overnight while they immersed themselves in the wholesome food, music, and dancing. Suddenly, the Kunkels’ business included a campground resort. Today, there are 90 serviced sites, an artificial lake stocked with canoes and rowboats, a beach, a playground, showers and laundry facilities. The Great Canadian Barn Dance is 52 km (32 mi) northeast of Wateron. From Fort Macleod, it’s 56 km (35 mi) southwest.
