Fort George and Buckingham House Provincial Historic site

Loading...

High on the bank of the North Saskatchewan River sat two competing fur trade posts. From 1792-1800, the North West Company's "Fort George" vied with the Hudson's Bay Company's "Buckingham House" to trade the most furs and make the highest profit. But these forts were also vibrant, multicultural communities filled with children resulting from marriages between Indigenous women and European men. Get up close with artifacts in the museum, like a porcupine quill loom, tipi, or the currency of the day: a beaver pelt. A forested trail leads to the historic fort sites, where interpretive signage and your guide will shed a little light on what life was like here more than two centuries ago.
