Fort Chipewyan

Fort Chipewyan, located in Fort Chipewyan in the Wood Buffalo region, offers remote northern lakefront experiences with rich living history and culture. Set on the southwest shore of Lake Athabasca, this isolated community is reached by plane or boat in summer and by winter road when the lake freezes. Established in 1788 as a Northwest Trading Company post, it is recognized as Alberta’s oldest settlement and still reflects its trading past. Travellers encounter a community where trapping and fishing remain part of daily life, and where Mikisew Cree First Nation, Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation, and Fort Chipewyan Métis residents keep deep cultural traditions alive.
