Crypt Lake Trail

Crypt Lake Trail in Waterton Lakes National Park offers a challenging 17-km (11-mi) hike to an alpine lake, with big views along the way. The adventure begins with a 15-minute boat ride from the Waterton docks—the trailhead is accessible only by water. The route generally takes a little over six hours, winding through forest and across the mountainside before hikers climb a ladder and pass through a cave. Five waterfalls add drama to the journey, while golden eagles and mountain goats may appear along the route. National Geographic named it one of the world’s most thrilling trails. The trail ends at Upper Waterton Lake before looping back to the trailhead for the return boat trip to Waterton village. Its popularity and difficulty make preparation and an early start important.
