Chain Lakes Provincial Recreation Area was originally part of the network of Forest Recreation Program sites run by the Alberta Forest Service, but was transferred to Alberta Parks in the 1990s. Chain Lakes Campground offers a rustic camping experience with 21 nicely treed, unserviced front-country campsites with firepits, pit toilets and no shower building. There is a picnic shelter for those rainy days. The nearest town, Athabasca, is a 40-minute drive away and offers a full range of supplies and services. Note: Chain Lakes Provincial Recreation Area is located near Athabasca, in northern Alberta, whereas Chain Lakes Provincial Park is located along Highway 22 in southern Alberta.
