Carway is a hamlet that sits on the border between Canada and the United States. It’s about 24 km (15 mi) south of Cardston on Hwy 2. Carway gets its name from the combination of the nearest town in Alberta, Cardston, and the word “highway.” Here, the Canadian Border Service Agency processes travellers entering from the United States. It sits across the border from Port Piegan in Montana, and you can access it from Hwy 2 in Alberta and Hwy 89 in Montana. This hamlet has been a popular border crossing for more than a century. The earliest customs service in the region began around 5 km (3 mi) eastward at St. Mary’s Crossing on the Saint Mary River in 1883. The North-West Mounted Police (NWMP) collected duties and patrolled the border. Duty-free shopping is available at the Carway crossing, but Cardston is the closest place to stock up on groceries and other staples.
