Athabasca River Natural Wonders (Concretions)

Loading...

Take an exciting helicopter flight and embark on an unforgettable sightseeing tour, complete with a guided hike at the heart of the Grand Rapids (Athabasca River). Walk among colossal spheroid boulders that created this remote set of Class VI rapids, some reaching over 3 meters in height. These enormous Concretions are some of the largest on the planet, scattered throughout the river valley by the thousands, creating a spectacular, otherworldly landscape. The tour also offers views of incredible scenery, powerful whitewater, and abundant petrified wood, Alberta’s official gemstone. Along the way, you’ll learn about historic Grand Island, once home to the Hudson's Bay Company's narrow-gauge railway. Built in 1889, this push-cart railway moved over 200,000 tons of freight per season and was crucial to the development of Canada’s North and the formation of our nation. Trips to the site by boat with "extended" hiking opportunities are also available.
