Step Back in Time: Doors Open at McKay Avenue School!, located in downtown Edmonton, offers free self-guided heritage tours that bring Alberta’s early classrooms and politics to life. Set inside historic McKay Avenue School, the Edmonton Public Schools Archives and Museum lets visitors trace education from the 1881 Schoolhouse era through to the 1950s. Explore the 1906 Legislative Chamber where Alberta’s first provincial legislature met, then wander through period classrooms filled with interpretive displays. On a special festival day, guests can also visit the 1881 Schoolhouse and Grandma’s Place for a closer look at community roots. Admission is free, with donations appreciated, and self-guided tours run Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with a featured program on Tuesday, July 7 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
