Join Alberta Land-Based Education and Moose Mountain Horseback Adventures for a hands-on Elk and White-Tailed Deer Hide Tanning Course led by Blackfoot Elder Larry Mistakenchief, who brings over 60 years of experience, alongside Kelly Gordon. This full-day workshop takes place on Saturday, March 29, 2026, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM at Moose Mountain Horseback Adventures Ranch in Foothills County, Alberta. Participants will learn traditional hide tanning techniques through several phases, including building a spruce frame, lacing, skinning, and fleshing, along with wet and dry hair removal methods. The course also covers dry scraping, using traditional scraper tools, learning a sunlight brain tanning recipe, crafting tripods to soften hides, and building a tanning station before finishing the day with smoke tanning an elk hide. The workshop costs $350 per person and is limited to 20 participants.m
