Originating at the base of the Saskatchewan Glacier in the Columbia Icefield in the Canadian Rockies, the North Saskatchewan River flows eastward, bisecting the city of Edmonton in a deep and winding river valley – providing one of the longest stretches of urban green space in North America at 7,400 hectares (18,285 acres). The river valley has 22 major parks and over 150 km (93 mi) of trails for hiking and cycling in summer and snowshoeing and cross-country skiing in winter. Many of the city's famous festivals are held here, year-round.
