Bar U Ranch National Historic Site

The Bar U Ranch National Historic Site, founded in 1882 in the Alberta foothills, is one of Canada’s most important symbols of early ranching life. Once covering more than 157,000 acres, it became a leader in cattle and Percheron horse operations and drew influential figures such as George Lane and Patrick Burns. Its preserved buildings, landscapes, and stories offer an authentic window into the development of ranching on the Canadian Prairies. Today, visitors can explore historic barns, corrals, and a working ranch setting while enjoying demonstrations, wagon rides, and scenic trails along Pekisko Creek. Interpretive programs and partnerships with Indigenous communities add depth to the experience. With welcoming facilities and a landscape that still reflects its historic roots, the Bar U Ranch provides an engaging and immersive look at western heritage for visitors of all ages.
