“Can we stop? Can we stop?” When this comes from the backseat on any road trip that involves Red Deer, I know it’s because we are close to the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame & Museum. And for kids to ask to stop at a museum – well, you have to stop.
Let Our Games Begin
We love that this place has so many exhibits and halls to explore but the Sports Hall is where the family spends the most time. I can’t argue – it’s a fun place to hang out and play games. It used to be that we let the kids win the games but now that they are involved in their own sports, those days are done.
More than a dozen interactive displays are included in our family competition. The virtual multi-sport center has five sports: basketball, football, soccer, hockey and baseball. The putting green and the table top curling tests our aim while a climbing wall and wheelchair races test our stamina. Then it’s on to the Ice and Snow Gallery to see who has the fastest push starts with the big bobsled.
Alberta’s Who’s Who
On our first visit, while the rest of the family headed for the Sports Hall, I stopped to explore the Hall of Fame. I felt such pride when I saw all those photos lining every inch of the massive hall. Learning about the people whose names decorate so many sporting facilities in Alberta was fascinating. I loved looking at the inductees from the early years dressed in the sporting gear of the day. Hockey players with no helmets and speed skaters in wool leggings proved that sports have evolved for the better.
When I found a photo of my friend from high school, I had to haul the kids in to brag that I knew someone. But as soon as they got there, my son pointed out pictures of his friend’s grandfather and another’s uncle, so I guess bragging was pointless.
The Alberta Sports Hall of Fame & Museum was created in 1957 with the permanent Red Deer location opening in 2000. With over 7,000 objects in the collection, the showcases change frequently and we look forward to something new every visit. If you want to learn more, a deeper dive in the Resource Centre yields a wealth of information about Alberta’s sports and her heroes.
And the Winner is…
The lively discussion about who won each event usually follows us to the car. I’m sure we will be back soon….a rematch is always in the works.
