“Fat tires are made for spring cycling,” my riding companion shouts as we roll on to the Tunnel Mountain Loop about five minutes from downtown Banff. “Let’s get muddy!”

Fat tire technology has transformed spring’s slippery tracks into a sloppy playground, where vestigial snow patches combine with snowmelt micro-ponds to launch “puddle-wonderful” pedaling. (Or is it pedal-wonderful puddling?) Either way, the comings and goings of spring and winter weather make for one of the best times to explore Canada’s first national park.
