Ice Walking Winter Outdoor Activities

The deep stillness at the bottom of the frozen canyon is broken only by the sound of boots crunching in the snow. Towering waterfalls plunge down steep rock walls, frozen in place as if frozen in time. Wander through a maze of colossal pillars of ice and surreal sculptures, backlit in blues and greens. The winter canyons of the Canadian Rockies have to be seen to be believed. Professional Alberta guides provide everything you need – ice cleats, trekking poles, beverages and snacks.

Turquoise, glacial waters and startling canyon walls grow ever more impressive along this short trail. Multiple bridges span the narrow gorge, crossing several times for spine-tingling views of the river below. Watch for fuchsia fireweed and mountain bluebirds in a landscape shaped by fire, erosion and mountain-building.

Grotto Canyon

Ten minutes from the town of Canmore, Grotto Canyon can only be accessed on foot. Take the trail from the Grotto Mountain daytime car park and walk about a kilometre to get to the narrow-walled creek bed, which twists for another kilometre. As the smooth limestone walls get steeper, you’ll come upon a fork in the creekbed. Heading right takes you to a glistening waterfall. If you look carefully, just before the falls on the left at eye level, you will see Hopi pictographs, painted some 500-1,000 years ago. Walk it in summer or go with a guide in winter.
