Ice Walking Winter Outdoor Activities

Who needs long walks on the beach when there's frozen canyons begging to be trekked? Check out that winter sunshine sparkling on a frozen creek. ● Good to know: Guided ice walking tours come with steel ice cleats. That means slipping hazards are minimal. Cool geological and historical facts come standard, too. ● Day or night: What's cooler than a daytime guided ice walk through canyons? The same tour under the stars. And you get to keep your headlamp after. ● Solo: Bring your own ice cleats to walk the frozen path of Grotto Canyon near Canmore.

Grotto Canyon

Canmore, Alberta

Ten minutes from the town of Canmore, Grotto Canyon can only be accessed on foot. Take the trail from the Grotto Mountain daytime car park and walk about a kilometre to get to the narrow-walled creek bed, which twists for another kilometre. As the smooth limestone walls get steeper, you’ll come upon a fork in the creekbed. Heading right takes you to a glistening waterfall. If you look carefully, just before the falls on the left at eye level, you will see Hopi pictographs, painted some 500-1,000 years ago. Walk it in summer or go with a guide in winter.

Turquoise, glacial waters and startling canyon walls grow ever more impressive along this short trail. Multiple bridges span the narrow gorge, crossing several times for spine-tingling views of the river below. Watch for fuchsia fireweed and mountain bluebirds in a landscape shaped by fire, erosion and mountain-building.
