Ski, relax, repeat. That’s pretty much my motto. I’m all about giving it everything I’ve got, as long as there’s a gourmet meal and deep tissue massage waiting for me at the end of the day. Thus far, our ski holiday at Marmot Basin in Jasper National Park has perfectly embodied this philosophy.

We’re a large group of seven this year, so we opted to overnight in Calgary and take the shuttle instead of driving. Smart decision. The scenic winter wonderland found along the famed Icefields Parkway between Lake Louise and Jasper was beyond magical and the ideal start to our trip.

A Laid Back Ski Scene

Yesterday we conquered Marmot – easing in with a few blues, and then upping our game to black diamonds after lunch. We even gave the terrain park’s rails, jumps and jibs a go. Five skiers and two snowboarders fuelled by the thrill of shredding dry Alberta powder in the breathtaking Canadian Rockies. Maybe you saw our boisterous group? If not, you definitely would have heard us laughing, hooting and hollering our way down every run. Then again, we weren’t all that different from everyone else on the hill. Laid back, friendly and approachable seems to be the Marmot way. Works for me.

Good Times On and Off the Hill

Jasper’s après ski scene rivals its runs. Another win for Marmot. On-mountain the Kokanee Glacier Deck off the Caribou Lounge offers wicked views of the Athabasca Valley and is the place for post-ski pints. We lucked out with warm spring weather and even managed to score a bit of a tan on the sundrenched patio. In town we kicked it up a notch with a meal at the Fiddle River Restaurant. Excellent food, wine and service enjoyed by all. Oh, and if you haven’t tried elk tenderloin before, I highly recommend giving it a go. The culinary options are pretty darn impressive in Jasper. You’ll find everything from fining dining and gastro pub fare to my absolute favourite dish – authentic, hand tossed Neapolitan pizza.

Spa and Splurge at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge

After a second outstanding day on the slopes this afternoon is all about being pampered. It’s our good fortune that the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge boasts one of the best spa’s in Canada. We arrive early to take full advantage of the steam room and sauna. My husband and I have decided to splurge on the two-hour Sacred Moments experience in the deluxe couple’s suite. We’ll begin with a fireside therapeutic mineral scrub, followed by a steam session and relaxing bath in the suite’s soaker tub. A side-by-side essential oil massage completes the treatment. My legs will thank me tomorrow. Dinner with our gang in the resort’s Moose’s Nook Chophouse will be the final indulgence of the day. A five-course chef’s tasting menu featuring Alberta Bison Chateaubriand might just be the ultimate ending to our epic Canadian Rockies’ ski holiday.
