BOUTIQUE HOTELS ARE THE ULTIMATE IN URBAN CHIC

Author: Travel Alberta

I love travelling to Calgary for business and pleasure. Rather than booking the same hotel or even area, I like to mix it up. Explore new neighbourhoods. Discover hidden gems.

Over the years I’ve stayed at four of Calgary’s luxury boutique hotels. Each offers an exceptional experience with personalised service.

Bow River Views at the Kensington Riverside Inn

Located in the heart of Kensington Village, this 19-room Relais & Châteaux hotel is only a few minutes from Calgary’s business district. For me, the Kensington Riverside Inn is a peaceful escape in the city. My mornings always start with a walk along the tree lined Bow River pathway – a relaxing way to ease into a busy day. I also celebrated my 5th anniversary here. Cosy guest room with garden patio. Romantic dinner at the award-winning Chef’s Table. Fireside nightcaps. Perfection.

Cool Uptown Vibe at Hotel Elan

If I’m in a foodie kind of mood I’ll book a room at Hotel Elan in Calgary’s famous Uptown 17th Avenue district. Chilli coconut margaritas and guacamole made table side at Anjeo. Caprese salad with creamy buffalo mozzarella at Mercado. Authentic Neapolitan fire roasted pizza at Famoso. Between dining at some of the city’s hottest restaurants and my free continental breakfast, weight gain is almost inevitable – especially when relaxing on the balcony of my chic suite wins out over using Elan’s fitness facilities.

Upscale Family Stay at Le Germain

Le Germain is a luxury hotel perfect for business travellers, but also great for families. My husband and I brought the children here last summer. The location is ideal. We packed the kids in the pushchair and walked to Fort Calgary in 15 minutes and made it to the Calgary Zoo in less than 35 minutes. The hotel is also pet friendly and Dustin – our travel-ready golden retriever – was thrilled with his pup-sized bed. However, he wasn’t all that pleased when we came back from dinner at Le Germain’s CHARCUT Roast House minus the expected leftovers.

Outdoor Pool Party at Hotel Arts

Hotel Arts is one of the few central hotels with an outdoor pool. This means I can enjoy fabulous cuisine – and cocktails – from the property’s award-winning restaurants while lounging poolside. It’s always best when I’m in town for two nights so that I can dine at both Raw Bar by Duncan Li and Yellow Door Bistro. I try and work off those extra calories with a city tour on Hotel Arts’ complimentary cruiser bikes.
