The Whyte Museum inspires discovery and wonder when people and the Rocky Mountains meet. We share stories and explore the culture shaped by this mountain landscape. Our founders, Peter and Catharine Whyte, were local artists and philanthropists who wished to offer a place where people could gather and appreciate the culture and beauty of the area. We welcome visitors to our mountain home, sharing with them our sense of awe and belonging, through our exhibitions, events, heritage homes, archives, library and museum shop.
Although Monod Sports has become a diversified outdoor sporting goods store based in Banff National Park (with a retail store in Banff and online store), every major theme can be traced back to the family’s history of skiing, mountaineering and love of the outdoors. John Monod, founder of Monod Sports, never came to Canada from Switzerland with the intention of being a retailer. He was an adventurer, a mountaineer and a young man looking for a new start in a new country. Above all else, Johnny Monod was a skier.

Walter Phillips Gallery is pleased to present Like ships in the night, a solo exhibition by Montreal-based, Algonquin artist Caroline Monnet. The title emerges from the idiom 'ships in the night' that describes how signals in the dark are often the sole way of communicating across large divides—both geographically, culturally and interpersonally. The saying, ‘like ships in the night’ also speaks to transient relationships, missed connections, and attempts to draw lines between conversations and objects that might be obscured from one another. Bringing into play sculpture and video, Monnet creates an abstracted apparatus that aims to demonstrate dichotomies in social, cultural and political identities, resulting in a critique of the colonial, industrial and economic interchange between Canada and Europe. Like ships in the night speaks to the interconnectedness and the diversity of views that shapes our place within the world while shedding light upon the given historical and cultural complexities of the contemporary colonial context.Caroline Monnet is the recipient of the 2017 Walter Phillips Gallery Indigenous Commission Award, created to support the commission of new work.
