Follow the Red Deer River west on Coal Camp Rd. and you’ll eventually reach Ya Ha Tinda Ranch, the only federally operated working horse ranch in Canada. Owned and managed by Parks Canada, the ranch has been used to train, breed, and winter working horses used to patrol national parks since 1917. The Ya Ha Tinda covers 40 sq km (3,945 ha) of land running 27 km (17 mi) along the north bank of the Red Deer River, and is home to an abundance of wildlife in the area, including grizzlies, wolves, cougars, moose, deer, and bighorn sheep. In addition to touring the ranch and viewing wildlife, visitors can bring along their own horses to ride the many trails connected to the site.
