Back 40 Distillery reflects the strong work ethic and passion for quality spirits shared by founders Rick Lazaruik and Lorne Haugen owners and operators. And so the dream of producing hand-crafted, small batch, gluten free spirits began more than possible, it was inevitable. As owners and operators, Lorne and Rick are responsible for every aspect of the distilling process. They returned to the partners they had met in the local community over the years. Their beet sugar comes from Taber, Alberta. As seasonal fruits become available, they will source berries and apples from local growers in the Camrose area. For now, they turn to orchards in nearby British Columbia for the perfect apples to recreate a unique, “fresh from the oven apple pie” taste in their Ol’ Apple Betty spirit.From the beginning, they were determined to support the local community as their friends and neighbors had support them as they built there own business. The day they put up the Back 40 Distillery sign and the public started coming in, was the day they knew it had all been worth it.Lorne and Rick are as proud of their tasting room as they are the spirits available there. The cozy spot is a perfect place for small gatherings and special occasions. They are licensed to serve drinks and are proud to offer a number of cocktails that feature their high quality product. Visitors can also purchase directly from the distillery. People are encouraged to take a tour of the facility and see first hand Lorne and Rick’s passion at work.
