Local flavour explosion

Edmonton’s &27 restaurant in Old Strathcona has a gourmet brunch that will start your year off right. Order the bourbon banana bread with whisky caramel sauce and maple candied bacon for the table while you peruse the menu. If you can’t imagine breakfast without eggs, go for the Benedict, which is served with a house-baked English muffin, and smoked salmon, pulled pork or white bean and mushrooms. If your New Year’s resolutions include healthier eating, then opt for the artisan quinoa porridge or kale and spinach salad. For those of you who could care less about calories, go for gusto with the chicken and waffle, or the 10-day in-house corned beef, served with duck fat fried potato, Worcestershire gastrique, a poached egg and hollandaise.

Meat lovers lair

Bolero, about 10-minutes south of downtown Calgary, is a carnival for carnivores. Brunch at this Brazilian-style steakhouse includes all of your buffet favourites, like waffles, potatoes, cheese, fresh fruit, baked goods and made-to-order omelettes, as well as the house-specialties. Bring your all-you-can-eat appetite for the slow-roasted meat, poultry and seafood served tableside by gaucho chefs. Tender Alberta beef, chicken, pork loin, lamb and sweet baby back ribs are just a selection of the succulent skewers on offer. Go easy at the fresco salad bar to ensure you’re able to try all 16-varieties, including the hugely popular, glazed grilled pineapple. If you’re able to fit in dessert the mocha strawberry tortes are out of this world.

Canadian comfort cuisine

Seasonal, farm-to-table fare awaits you at The Bison in Banff. Benedict fans can choose from four unique presentations on a cheese and herb biscuit, including the steak and mushroom with AAA rib eye, and duck confit and goat cheese. If you need to satisfy your sweet tooth, order the French toast, which comes with double smoked bacon, fresh berries, sylvan star gouda, apple slaw and whipped cream. Those of you who require a little hair of the dog to get you going can sip on classic mimosas and Caesars, or try the brunch shaft, which is the perfect post-party pick-me-up concoction made from espresso vodka, freshly brewed espresso and chocolate milk.

Famous French Toast

Whether you crave sweet, savoury or traditional, you’ll find the best French toast in Canmore at the Georgetown Inn’s Miner’s Lamp Pub. The heavenly apple, with caramelized Galas, gets the popular vote, while the Monte Cristo, stuffed with Swiss cheese and ham, will satisfy even the most ravenousness of appetites. Flapjacks more your thing? Give the banana chocolate chip, or bacon stuffed pancakes a go. The Miner’s also serves up a lip-smacking full English breakfast, complete with two eggs, bacon, sausage, baked beans and hash-browns. Kids are always welcome, so feel free to bring them along.

A feast for the senses

Pop to The Pines at the Pyramid Lake Resort, about 10-minutes north of Jasper, for a gourmet brunch with dramatic mountain views. This hidden gem, beloved by locals, serves hearty fare that’s sure to satisfy. House favourites include steak and eggs with fire grilled AAA beef tenderloin, corn beef hash topped with soft poached eggs and hollandaise and the croissantwich stuffed with avocado, tomatoes, chorizo and smoked Applewood cheddar.  The third generation banana bread French toast and the vanilla bean English style crepes are also legendary here, so do your best to save room for dessert.
