In Edmonton, I’m enthralled with the best Mexican food I’ve had in Canada and sip classic cocktails as the sun sets. In Calgary, I discover a sensational bar filled with Gen Xers sipping local brews and taste excellent bourbon in a room that feels like a 1920s speakeasy. And I discover perhaps the best vodka I’ve ever tasted, made in an abandoned theatre in a tiny town outside Calgary.

Surprises are everywhere in this province, which is showing an increasingly urban, and urbane, edge.
