In 2013, Andrew Kulynych was an avid home brewer experimenting with hard to find ingredients while seeking to honour the art of craft brewing. Later that same year, the Alberta governments relaxation of minimum requirements for microbreweries gave Andrew Kulynych the greenlight to take his 6 year passion for home-brewing to the next level. He soon met brewmaster Warren Misik, then a student in the Olds College Brewmaster & Brewery Operations Program. They found they shared a common goal, creating a beer without compromise. The duo set out to brew the best pale ale and IPA in the province. The brewery takes its name from Bench Creek, a small body of water that runs near the brewery on its way to Edson. You cross it along your drive to the brewery in Edson and on Rodeo Road. They also take inspiration from their surroundings in brewing their delicious beer. The untouched natural beauty of Alberta’s wilderness echos in the purity of Bench Creeks craft brews. A brew making process that affirms nature’s control, from ingredients to finished product. Some beers can take months to develop and perfect. Each beer represents “the end of a long road that started with one impulse: good craft beer can be a force of nature.” Once again, nature takes the lead in naming the brewery’s various libations. They envision a “Naked Woodsman” trekking through the Alberta countryside and imagine what he might encounter. And thus, the Black Spruce Porter is born.
