Sitting by the soft glow of our wood burning fireplace, I savour the moment. A quiet evening in, sipping chilled champagne and watching blazing embers pop and crackle in the hearth. Our historic log cabin at The Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge is so cosy that I can picture winter here. A magical wonderland filled with glittering ice and powder fine snow.
Alberta’s Fairmont Hotels and Resorts
It’s actually the height of summer in Alberta’s Canadian Rockies and the air in Jasper National Park is lovely and warm. Last week, my husband surprised me with a road trip from Calgary to Edmonton, by way of the Icefields Parkway. He even improved upon my dream holiday with reservations at five Fairmont properties along the way.
Tomorrow we’ll complete our road trip with a stay at the Fairmont Hotel MacDonald in Edmonton, which first opened in 1915. We’re booked into the King George VI Suite that overlooks Edmonton’s River Valley – North America’s largest urban parkway. We plan to be there in time for their Royal Tea and Tour.
More Than a Century of Luxury in Calgary
Built in 1914 as a link for tourists travelling to Banff on the Canadian Pacific Railway, The Fairmont Palliser is an iconic Calgary landmark. Even entering the grand lobby is an exquisite experience. Polished marble floors and columns, vaulted ceilings, rich wood panelling and gold embellishments. The Oak Room Lounge was in full swing when we arrived. Evening cocktails and live jazz – our holiday had begun!
A Grand Castle in the Canadian Rockies
Pulling up to The Fairmont Banff Springs I felt like a queen arriving at a majestic alpine castle. My royal treatment continued with a couple’s massage at the Fairmont’s Willow Stream spa. After, with our bodies relaxed and minds euphoric, we walked into town and shopped our way along Main Street. A romantic dinner at the resort’s regionally inspired restaurant The Banffshire Club completed our first day of indulgence in the Canadian Rocky Mountains.
Endless Beauty in Lake Louise
At The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise we spent as much time as possible on the sunlit Lakeview Lounge patio for panoramic views of the lake and Victoria Glacier. On our last morning, before setting off on the Icefields Parkway to Jasper, we woke before dawn for the sunrise canoe experience on Lake Louise. From the middle of the lake we watched night become day in an explosion of colour over Mount Victoria. It was one unforgettable moment from an extraordinary holiday.
