Family fun at West Edmonton Mall

You'll need at least two days for the 800-plus shops and attractions at West Edmonton Mall — one of the world’s largest shopping malls. First, stroll Europa Boulevard for exclusive boutiques, luxury brands and Simons – the Quebec-based department store with designer clothes and stylish home décor. Maybe you’ll leave with a new cardigan, a funky dining room tablecloth or a bedspread? Next pop into Williams Sonoma for that lemon-coloured Dutch oven you’ve been eyeing.

With a mall this size, you may want to plan your route in advance. If you want some focused shopping time, such attractions as the Galaxyland amusement park, the Ice Palace skating rink, mini-golf course, IMAX 3D Theatre and gigantic World Waterpark, should keep those shoppers with less retail stamina busy, and give you oodles of time to shop till you drop.

Shopping is best done with like-minded friends. That means bringing along your best gal pals for a weekend of retail fun.

Other Edmonton spots

Edmonton has much to offer outside of what the locals call West Ed, especially if you’re hunting for outlet deals.

At South Edmonton Common, you’ll find all the big retailers and outlet stores with plenty of things to occupy your entire crew. For the shopaholic, you’ll find Saks Off 5th, Marshalls, Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger and Nike. While you are warming up your credit card, you can distract the family with a cinema, Chuck E. Cheese’s and top-notch food offerings.

On your way from (or into) the city, don’t miss Premium Outlet Collection Edmonton International Airport, which is scheduled to open in the spring of 2018 with 428,000 square feet of outlet shopping and more than 70 brands. Yeah, give yourself some extra time.

Deal hunters will like this place. South Edmonton Common is for anyone who likes to save a dollar, but also a relaxing dinner and a movie.

Calgary: Designer Deals at CrossIron Mills

Finding a bargain makes shopping even more fun, so you can expect big rewards at CrossIron Mills – just 20 minutes north of downtown Calgary. Alberta’s largest one-level mall has 200 stores and an incredible 100 outlets. OK, now think strategy. Shop for the kids first. New jeans and play clothes at the Gap Factory Store. Then think about other family members. Perhaps a wallet from Coach Men’s Factory? End on a high note at Designer Shoe Warehouse. There’s a pair of strappy sandals calling your name.

Put on your comfiest walking shoes to navigate your way through the 200 stores at CrossIron Mills.

You can’t skip Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World. It looks incredible. Trophy fish, murals, pontoon boats, outdoor scenes and life-sized wildlife – this is worth a trip even if you just want to gawk in awe.

Bass Pro Shops is not your standard outdoors store. You might not only find your next favourite hiking boots, but also spot a bear in the "wilds."

High Fashion at Chinook Centre

Anticipate the pinnacle of shopping at Chinook Centre in southwest Calgary. All of the kings and queens of fashion are here. Canada Goose, Hudson's Bay, Tiffany & Co., Saks Fifth Avenue. And the list goes on. Oh, and of course a special shopping shout out must be given to Canada's first ever Nordstrom department store. Your credit card may be quivering in anticipation.

True, you could spend most of the day shopping at Nordstrom. But be sure to leave enough time scope out the latest fashions at Saks Fifth Avenue, Canada Goose and many more.
