Caving & Climbing 

Wood Buffalo National Park consists of several landscapes, one of which is known as karstland. Both the north and south loops of the Salt River Trail take hikers past the sinkholes, caves, and crevasses that characterize karst terrain. Occurring when groundwater dissolves elements such as gypsum, salt and limestone, the formations are notoriously unstable.

Those looking to practice their mountain climbing techniques before hitting the Rockies can find excellent indoor facilities in Grande Prairie at the Regional College. The 2,700 square foot climbing centre has a 24 foot wall with slabs, overhangs and ridges. Slave Lake’s Northern Lakes College Gym has a 24 foot wall featuring top ropes and lead climbing.
